Bagh printing comes from the village of Bagh in western Madhya Pradesh, named after the river that runs through it. Artisans carve teak blocks by hand and print with natural dyes of alizarin red and iron black, then wash the cloth in the flowing river to set the colour.

Shown here in yellow. Chosen piece by piece for Saptadhārā.

Caring for it

  • Dry clean for the first wash; afterwards gentle hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent.
  • Dry in shade and iron on the reverse at low heat, never directly on zari or print.
  • Store folded in muslin, away from damp and direct sun.

The craft holds a Geographical Indication, and no two pieces print exactly alike. Made by hand, so small irregularities are a mark of the maker, not a flaw.
