Caring for your handloom saree
A handwoven saree can last for generations if it is treated gently. A few simple habits make all the difference.
Washing
- Dry-clean silk and zari sarees, especially for the first few washes.
- Cotton sarees can be hand-washed in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not wring or twist; press the water out gently.
- Wash separately the first time, as natural dyes may bleed slightly.
Drying and ironing
- Dry in the shade, never in direct sun, to protect the colour.
- Iron on a low to medium setting, on the reverse side, and never directly on the zari.
Storing
- Wrap in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, not plastic, so the fabric can breathe.
- Refold along different lines every few months to stop creases from weakening the threads.
- Keep away from damp. A few neem leaves or a cedar block helps keep insects away; avoid naphthalene balls directly on zari.
Air it out
Take your saree out and air it in the shade every few months, even when you are not wearing it.
